The Bat Pack - Data Processing Subscription (Annual)

NZ$149.95 every 12 months

Our digital Bat Pack data processing subscription helps New Zealanders detect native bats and turn that knowledge into meaningful action for the habitats they rely on.

Simply record nighttime sounds using your full spectrum bat detector, then upload the files to our partnered BTO analysis platform. Within 48 hours, your recordings are automatically processed and transformed into a personalised report identifying bat species, activity patterns, feeding buzzes, and social calls.

Our automated bat call classifiers have been trained on tens of thousands of recordings, enabling them to accurately distinguish New Zealand’s long-tailed and short-tailed bats from other night-time sounds. This gives you fast, reliable insights into which bats are present and what they’re doing at your survey site.

All recordings also contribute to the New Zealand National Bat Survey, helping build a clearer picture of bat distribution and supporting conservation through citizen science.

Important note: sound recordings used with The Bat Pack must be no longer than 5 seconds in length. This is a readily configurable setting on almost all full spectrum bat detectors. 250GB annual limit.

Once you have purchased your Bat Pack sign up to the New Zealand National Bat Survey here and follow the instructions in our QRG to set up your account and book your survey location! For further assistance, please contact us at mark@thebatcolab.co.nz.

  • The Bat Pack includes:

A data pack to upload your recordings to the BTO Desktop App.

Access to custom reporting with fascinating insights tailored to your findings, with a 48 hour data processing turnaround.

Interactive survey maps where you can view other user contributions.

    Key project stats and updates.

    Compatible with your own detectors.

    Key benefits and features:

    • Powerful data processing allows for multiple bat species that present to be identified in each recording, not just the bats with the strongest signals. This means that quieter bat species have the opportunity to be identified.

    • There is separate identification for bat echolocation calls, social calls and feeding buzzes, not only helping to identify species but feeding patterns, proximity to roosts and mating behaviours.

    • Project specific visualisations allow you to see summaries of species at various recording sites, activity timing and activity mapping.

    • The special reporting algorithm was developed in the UK by Dr Stuart Newsom and Dr Simon Gillings in collaboration with experts throughout Europe. We are now bringing this exciting world of bat surveying to New Zealand.

  • Pricing is based on typical and reasonable use consistent with the intended purpose of the service. The subscription includes a generous allowance designed to accommodate normal survey effort across the majority of users. Where usage substantially exceeds typical levels, this may be reviewed to ensure the service remains sustainable and fair for all users. In such cases, options may include discussing an alternative plan, applying an additional usage charge, or adjusting future access by agreement. Any review of usage will be undertaken transparently and in good faith, with the aim of maintaining value, certainty, and ongoing access rather than restricting use unnecessarily.
