Our story
“I believe that collaboration between individuals and organisations in the bat management and conservation field represents a synergistic approach capable of driving meaningful change. The purpose behind The Bat Co. Lab is fostering an engaged community of bat enthusiasts, directing focus to the most relevant topics and advancements in the field, and increasing accessibility to sources of knowledge and experience for the betterment of our collaborators and bats.”

Mark’s journey
“After more than 20 years working across freshwater and fish ecology, my commitment to continuous learning led me to a new challenge: bat ecology. I was drawn to bats because of their rarity, complexity, and the important but often overlooked role they play in healthy ecosystems.
The Bat Co Lab was created to bring together specialist ecological expertise and a new way of supporting bat outcomes. At its core, our work helps organisations make informed decisions through evidence-based consultancy, practical ecological advice, and approaches aligned with recognised bat protocols. We work across diverse projects to reduce uncertainty, manage ecological risk, and deliver outcomes that are robust in science and workable in practice.
But consultancy is only one part of the picture. We believe better conservation outcomes depend on better information. Through efficient data collection, processing, and interpretation, we aim to help build a stronger understanding of bat populations and create knowledge that supports both project decisions and long-term conservation.
That ambition extends beyond our consultancy work. Through initiatives like the National Bat Survey, we want to make participation in bat monitoring more accessible and create opportunities for people to contribute in meaningful ways. By combining professional expertise with community involvement, we hope to strengthen the knowledge, connections, and collective effort needed to support bats into the future.”
