Our digital Bat Pack data subscription is designed to empower New Zealanders to detect our native bats, and turn that into management action in the habitats they rely on.
Do you want to find out if you have bats flying around your place at night, but don’t know how to identify their echolocation calls from insect or bird sounds? Perhaps you’re not keen on clicking through thousands of sound recordings from dozens of survey sites to see where and when you have bat activity. We get you answers quick.
Simply record nighttime sounds with your bat detector (any full spectrum detector is suitable), then upload the sound files using our partnered BTO platform. Your data will be analysed and transformed into a personalised report, emailed to you within 48 hours. Our automated bat call classifiers have been built from tens of thousands of sound recordings, including long and short tailed bats and a myriad of other night time sounds. It automatically identifies and separates New Zealand’s native bat species’ calls from other nigh time noises, allowing you to discover which bat species are nearby. It also categorises different types of bat calls, including search phase echolocation, feeding buzzes and social calls to give you immediate insights as to what bats were doing at your survey site.
The experience of acoustic bat surveying is now accessible to anyone, regardless of expertise. All of your sound recordings will be used to help build the New Zealand National Bat Survey bat distribution maps, showcasing the true power of citizen science in conservation.
Important note: sound recordings used with The Bat Pack must be no longer than 5 seconds in length. This is a readily configurable setting on almost all full spectrum bat detectors.
