Mohi Bush

Native bush of exceptionally high ecological value, spanning DOC-owned land and neighbouring private properties that also retain important remnants of native forest. The area has long been believed to support a colony of long-tailed bats, although no survey data currently exists to confirm this. This survey will directly test that long-held assumption and help establish whether long-tailed bats are present in the area.

Active – Phase 1

Objective/question

Determine bat presence/absence at the site, then progressively work through the 4-phase framework toward roost identification and habitat connectivity mapping (see Shared Methodology above).

Phase & trigger

Phase 1, in progress. Currently 18 of a planned 50 detectors deployed, rotating across sites — larger site than Rowe Bush. A 2-detector deployment summary (from Mohi + 1 neighbouring property) is available, but no data has been analysed yet from the current winter deployment.

Scale note

Larger in scale, time, and cost than Rowe Bush.

Deliverables & success criteria

Likely a Phase 1 findings report, same format as Rowe Bush. Success is simply undertaking the acoustic survey within the project area.

Mid-winter detector check

Placeholder entry — replace with real notes. Visited both Mohi Bush detectors for a routine SD card swap; ground was very wet after last week's rain but both units were dry and recording. No obvious signs of disturbance around either site.

Neighbouring property added to survey

Placeholder entry — replace with real notes. Landowner next door agreed to host a third detector along the boundary tree line, extending coverage beyond the original Mohi Bush footprint. Unit installed and first data pull scheduled for next visit.

First detector deployed

Placeholder entry — replace with real notes. First acoustic detector installed at Mohi Bush, mounted on a mature tree at the edge of the grassland clearing. Marks the start of the Phase 1 presence/absence survey for the site.
